"Democratic Circus" New Print Available
Fine art photography by Craig Boehman
The title of this piece was inspired by the Talking Heads song of the same name (less the "the"). I've seen so many of these families on the streets of Mumbai selling various balloons. I once spoke to a group of them through a friend who translated, and they told us they had come from Rajasthan to Mumbai because they can get good prices for balloons. Can you imagine traveling migrating to another part of your country to sell balloons? That's the brand of absurd reality that many of India's poor face.
Story Behind the Creation
I was riding in an auto-rickshaw when I took the picture. I was using a mirrorless system with a 50mm prime lens. This work belongs to a long-term project called Riding Rickshaw, in which all images were originally shot from the passenger's seat of an auto-rickshaw in Mumbai. Apart from walking around the streets of Mumbai finding scenes, shooting from a rickshaw is probably my second most-favorite way of photographing. The hit rate is extremely low, admittedly, but I'm afforded a unique perspective that typically results in candid frames, which is my preference when it comes to "street photography."
